Eagerly anticipating! →
Zooey Deschanel’s singing in Elf is what cemented my love for her, so I’m pretty pleased about this.

Book list
In December, I decided that I should read more, especially since in my reality, the inverse of reading is watching The Hills on DVD. I’ve been semi-successful at this (Lauren Conrad and her life still factor into mine more than I feel comfortable owning to) and ended up reading seven books in January. I hope to be going along at a ten book a month clip, but it is not a bad start. Liked a lot:...

Power tools (really) →
What does it say about me that I saw these and barely had the chance to register what they were before delightedly thinking “do want!”? (You can choose to see this as a question about the fact that I use “do want!”  as a legitimate grammatical construction and/or that I really want power tools.)

Update!
This evening, I made lasagne for dinner and the rest of the week’s lunches. I ran out of tin foil, so it is slightly more dry than normal, but still good. It’s very hard to ruin anything that contains tomato sauce, bechamel, and pasta (among other things).

I think this will be a weekend for cooking
There are three things that I can’t stop thinking about: 1. Pissaladiere 2. Boeuf Bourgignon  3. Lasagne I will probably make at least two out of the three.

HAHAHAHA
Despite being five years old, this article is amazing. If any of my publishing friends are reading this thing (hi, Jess!)… well, I’m pretty sure you will like it as much as I did. Why? I’d better just enumerate in quotes: 1. “Why, for God’s sake, would anyone want to work in the book business, anyway? What’s wrong with them?” 2. “On top of doing embarrassing,...

It’s nice to see somebody sticking up for the newspaper plotline on this season of The Wire, like in this piece from The Observer. I have to admit that I have been responding pretty poorly to what I can’t help but view as David Simon being immensely petty and self-righteous, and it doesn’t help that most of the things I read about this season decry the preoccupation with telling...

Wakefield by E. L. Doctorow  →
Did anyone dislike this story as much as I did? I really liked Ragtime (so much!), but have been disappointed by all of the Doctorow short stories that I’ve read thus far. I finished Sweet Land Stories last night, and they all felt so flat and lackluster. Of course he writes well, technically speaking, but that didn’t quite manage to make up for a slew of unlikable characters and...

After many years of indecision, I guess I can...
No matter how damning the song, I will stick to this exercise. Top 2-10 played songs in iTunes: 2. “Dance Music” - The Mountain Goats  3. “Millionaire” - Kelis featuring Andre 3000 4. “Dilaudid” - The Mountain Goats  5. “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl” - Broken Social Scene 6. “Amelia” - Joni Mitchell 7. “Crazy Love” -...

Vanity/delusion
I am hoping to get a real haircut by the end of the summer, by which time it should be at least three inches longer. I have long been obsessed by the idea of having bangs - plus Leila validated this fixation by independently suggesting them last week - even though I suspect I don’t have a tall enough forehead. Currently, I aspire to have something along the following lines: Think I could...

Renewed love affair
My roommate and I have been on a Gilmore Girls bender (the early years), and oh man oh man. I had forgotten how much I love that show. That’s all.

Wait, so... are you saying that we invaded Iraq... →
“Saddam Hussein initially didn’t think the U.S. would invade Iraq to destroy weapons of mass destruction, so he kept the fact that he had none a secret to prevent an Iranian invasion he believed could happen.”

I have comments now! I am a little bit in hate with them for being larger than my text and aligned to the left, but I guess I can live with that. Now if only my tags would show.

Half a thought
Aside from how smart the play itself was, the most thought provoking thing about Rock ‘N’ Roll was the realization that my grandmother and I did not at all process it the same way. It went beyond the normal fact that everybody sees things somewhat (or very) differently, and had everything to do with what side of the Cold War we were coming from. I don’t mean this in a political...

A thought:
Listening to a playlist that includes “Pull Over” by Trina, a spate of Girl Talk songs, and most significantly, “Upgrade U” is a good idea for neither the office nor the subway. Unless of course, booty-shaking is a personal goal for the day. Meanwhile, I will be sitting here shamefacedly squirming around in my seat.

"Lines for Winter" - Mark Strand
Tell yourself as it gets cold and gray falls from the air that you will go on walking, hearing the same tune no matter where you find yourself -- inside the dome of dark or under the cracking white of the moon's gaze in a valley of snow. Tonight as it gets cold tell yourself what you know which is nothing but the tune your bones play as you keep going. And you will be able for once to lie down...
